Reason for the award :

For the work of preserving the appearance of the Carrera del Darro.

The picturesque frescoes of the palatial houses of the Carrera del Darro, hidden under the lime for centuries, were recovered on the occasion of the fifth centennial.

The walk that goes down from the Alhambra hill, skirting the course of the river that gives it its name, is known as the Carrera del Darro. It is one of the most picturesque places in the entire city, as it participates in the natural lushness of the hill and the character of the Albaicín neighborhood. Since the 18th century, many of the palaces of the Carrera were decorated their facades with colorful fresco paintings, some in the Pompeian style. Over the centuries, these motifs were covered with plaster and successive layers of lime.

On the occasion of the Fifth Centennial, the city decided to recover the lost paintings. After exhaustive research and analysis, they proceeded to work on several buildings of the Carrera, including the 16th-century church of San Pedro and San Pablo. It was not exclusively a matter of bringing to light those frescoes whose existence was assumed, but of restoring them and applying the necessary restoration and conservation treatments.
