Restoration in the Cazalla de la Sierra Charterhouse

Cazalla de la Sierra, Sevilla, Andalucía.

Dating of the building: 1476.

Applicant: María del Carmen Ladrón de Guevara y Bracho.

Reason for the award :

For the effort in the recovery of an old monastery in a decaying state, and its rehabilitation as a place of tourist interest in the heart of Sierra Morena.

The restoration of the Charterhouse de la Sierra is a great example of the contribution of private initiative to the salvation of artistic heritage.

The Cazalla de la Sierra Charterhouse, a subsidiary of the Las Cuevas Charterhouse of the Sevillian capital, is located in a lush setting in the Sierra Norte. Founded in the 15th century, the Charterhouse had monastic activity until the first half of the 19th century, when first the French invasion and later the confiscation of Mendizábal, condemned it to a state of ruin and abandonment. An exhaustive investigation preceded its complete restoration and rehabilitation for tourist purposes in the form of a hostel in the vicinity of the Ruta de la Plata.
