Reason for the award :

For its contribution to the conservation and management of one of the most emblematic sites of European heritage, inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO.

Since the founding of the Patronage of the Alhambra and the Generalife, the management of this architectural treasure with a universal name has been a model to be followed in many other places.

The Alhambra Master Plan is a strategic document that establishes the fundamental actions for advanced management of the monument between 2007 and 2020. The proposals or measures outlined address its problems, use, and perspectives from a sustainable angle, concerning its values and those of the city of Granada, taking into account its category as a Site of Cultural Interest and as a UNESCO World Heritage. These measures are incorporated into programmes and sub-programmes of different natures grouped into the following strategic lines: Preservation, Sustainable use of the Alhambra, The Alhambra as a cultural landmark, and The Alhambra in an information and knowledge world.

The strategic plan includes a broad and complex vision of the monument, needed to act from contemporary perspectives. With its materialization, the Board of Trustees of the Alhambra and the Generalife also establishes a crucial link with the part of the history of the monument associated with its management, winning back a brilliant heritage in this field.  This initial impulse from the work of the experts, the direct involvement of the board itself in its drafting, and the social participation in its drafting and the final approval phase give it an excellent anchorage in the European democratic society of the 21st century. Without doubt, the monument has fulfilled and continues to fulfill the leading role that the international community has assigned to it as a melting pot and facilitator of knowledge through the Alhambra School.
