Rehabilitation of the abbey do Pelouro Axeito

Caldelas de Tuy, Pontevedra, Galicia.

Dating of the building: 1727.

Applicant: María Teresa Ubeira Santoro.

Reason for the award :

For a meticulous restoration in which the essence of the old abbey has been maintained, respecting the construction schemes and adapting them to new uses.

The thorough restoration, using traditional materials, of two dilapidated farms in Caldelas de Tuy has led to the foundation of tourist accommodation next to a school and a workshop school.

This Europa Nostra award was given for the rehabilitation of a complex made up of two farms separated by a few metres in Caldelas de Tui, on the Galician bank of the river Miño. One of them was an old rectory from the 18th century converted into rural accommodation under the name A Abadía. The other, called O Pelouro, was an old rustic house, reconditioned as a school centre and workshop school. Both buildings were raised from a state of ruin, using typical materials from the area; such as chestnut, stone, and rustic tiles. In both buildings, the traditional layout of farmhouses was recovered: a wine press, an oven, a laundry room, and granary. Moreover, the hectares of land allowed for the installation of a farm and orchard for educational purposes.
