Access to the rooftops of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela, La Coruña, Galicia.

Dating of the building: 11th century.

Applicant: Ricardo Sáez Díaz.

Reason for the award :

For the careful restoration of the roofs of the Cathedral and its conditioning as a new area of tourist interest in the city of Santiago.

With the restoration and accessibility to the rooftops, the Cathedral of Santiago has expanded and revitalized its cultural offer.

In a place like Santiago de Compostela, where urban speculation has not yet succeeded in altering the line of the urban horizon, the roofs of the Cathedral are the best place to enjoy panoramic views. For this reason, the Archbishopric of Santiago commissioned the first studies on their rehabilitation in 2001.

After obtaining the necessary permits, the first works started a year later. The project began with an unquestionable premise: the need to protect the cathedral. For this, a reversible project was designed, which would not affect the building, but which, in return, would adapt to modern needs. Thus, the roofs were made accessible, safeguarding them and securing the route. The stairs and towers were also completely refurbished, and carpets, handrails, and lighting were installed. Lastly, several walkways were set up to prevent accidents and protect the water pipes. These works have enhanced, if possible, the tourist interest in the Cathedral of Santiago.
