Rehabilitation housing plan in Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela, La Coruña, Galicia.

Dating of the building: 19th - 20th century.

Applicant: Santiago de Compostela Consortium.

Reason for the award :

For the heritage rehabilitation plan that is implemented in the historic centre of the city.

The Technical Rehabilitation Office has given advice on hundreds of renovation projects, thus safeguarding the original urban landscape of the city of Santiago.

The concession to Santiago de Compostela in 1985 of the title of World Heritage Site obliged its City Council to increase the degree of protection of its artistic and architectural treasures. As a result, the Technical Rehabilitation Office was created in 1993. This office is responsible for working in direct contact with its neighbors and district groups to agree on the necessary renovation of the houses, preserving their original characteristics. The old quarter has about three thousand buildings. By 1999 roughly four hundred interventions of this nature had already been completed. In all of them, the owners were advised to use traditional materials and not to introduce elements that could distort the picturesque urban landscape.
