Old salting factory renovated as a rural tourist house in Aldán-Cangas

Cangas do Morrazo, Pontevedra, Galicia.

Dating of the building: 18th century.

Applicant: Alfonso Penela Fernández.

Reason for the award :

For the careful rehabilitation of an architectural space from the early 18th century.

The dining room of the rural touristic house allows the contemplation, through glass, of the salting basins that once had a purpose in the old factory.

In 2000, an old salting factory on the banks of the Aldán estuary was rehabilitated. The small town of Porto, in the Rías Bajas of Pontevedra, monopolized international attention by obtaining an award in the Europa Nostra category. Although there are indications that the Romans were the first to install a salting industry in the area, the construction of the factory is accredited to families of Catalan origin.

The awarded rehabilitation works aimed at the conversion of the building into tourist apartments, with the determined effort to respect the original materials, masonry, and timber, as well as to preserve the elements of the old industry. This resulted in the new design of the dining room which allows us to contemplate the salting basins where the fish was marinated in salt until the 19th century.
