Conversion of an old tannery into a dwelling complex

Santiago de Compostela, La Coruña, Galicia.

Dating of the building: 18th century.

Applicant: Community of owners Carmen de Abaixo.

Reason for the award :

For the rehabilitation of the old tannery in Carme de Abaixo.

Europa Nostra awarded the reconversion of an abandoned and semi-dilapidated tannery into a brand-new development with thirty-one homes and a river walk along the Sarela.

The project on a ruinous abandoned tannery took place between 1989 and 1991. The building, located in the Carmen de Abajo neighbourhood of Compostela, had been functioning during the 18th and 19th centuries. It consisted of two large separate units, with their corresponding warehouses, drying rooms, and stables, as well as a mill. From the factory the views of the cathedral were very impressive, magnified by the great beauty of the natural setting where it was located. Hence, the decision was to convert the old factory into a brand new residential area, El Carmen, consisting of thirty-one apartments with communal services (swimming pool, tennis courts, and social club) and a small river walk on the banks of the Sarela.
