Reason for the award :

For the restoration of a 16th-century noble residence with unusual characteristics in Spanish palatial heritage.

The palace and site of Tabladillo is a spectacular complex in the province of Avila, successively developed from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

The term Tabladillo appears for the first time in the books of the Cathedral of Avila in 1250, although the first reference to the palace is from 1515. Since ancient times, the property has always belonged to the same noble family. The building is a compendium of architectural styles from different centuries. The original nucleus is from the 13th century, a defense square tower and fortified enclosure. In the 16th century, the main part of the palace was built, with a rectangular and open plan, centered around a nucleus of stairs and attached to the tower.

This project with palatial designs configures two main façades, opened in the form of galleries facing south and west, placing staircases at both ends, thus closing a rectangular space of Renaissance proportions. Multiple interventions in subsequent centuries contributed to increasing the general monumental character of the complex, which has the principal residence, guest pavilion, chapel, service rooms, nursery houses, stables, warehouses, garages, and other rooms. The restoration criteria have recovered the original layout and architecture, in modern style, but rescuing its main elements and adapting them to new uses and technologies. It has also resorted to the traditional construction techniques, both in the execution of the structure and in masonry and the different trades. Thus, for example, the ceiling, completely replaced, was designed with materials and armors typical of the time. Thanks to this, a unique and rare example of noble architecture from the 16th century has contributed to Spanish and European heritage.
