Restoration of urban space in Balborraz Street

Dating of the building: 20th century.

Applicant: Zamora City Council.

Reason for the award :

For the restoration of the urban space on Balborraz Street.

The cleaning and removal of extemporaneous elements in Balborraz Street, promoted by the City Council and Castille and Leon Regional Government, lasted more than five years.

Balborraz Street has connected the high and low areas of Zamora since the Middle Ages. It was always well known for its commercial importance, being the nucleus of the main trades. The passage of time has not deprived it of a picturesque air, visible in its low-rise houses with balconies and wooden gazebos that overlook the street. In the 20th century, its appearance was altered by the installation of power lines, pipes for different supplies, registration boxes, and other elements that disfigured it. For this reason the City Council, in collaboration with the Castille and Leon Regional Government, launched a repair and conservation campaign, works beginning in 1989 and only ending in 1995. As a result, one of the main streets of Zamora has recovered the original design of its façades.
