Restoration works in the town of Rubielos de Mora

Rubielos de Mora, Teruel, Aragón.

Dating of the building: 15th - 19th century.

Applicant: José Gonzalvo.

Reason for the award :

For the recovery of the historical-artistic heritage of Rubielos, in which the local administration and the neighborhood participated.

The recovery of Rubielos de Mora is linked to the figure of José Gonzalvo, a sculptor who sought support from the authorities and his neighbours to save his town from abandon and ruin.

The depopulation of Rubielos de Mora in the second half of the 20th century was one of the reasons for the state of ruin and abandonment of its historical-artistic heritage. Amongst sites of interest, this small town in Teruel has numerous palatial houses, excellent examples of vernacular architecture of Lower Aragon, the Gothic convent of the Augustinian order, the church of Saint Mary, and two medieval main doors to the historic centres.

The driving force behind the project was the sculptor José Gonzalvo, who decided to install his dwelling and workshop in the town of his birth. Sympathetic to the problems of the area, Gonzalo sought public support as well as the support of the neighbourhood to recover the monumental heritage of Rubielos. Today, the old stables accommodate the most comfortable living area of the old refurbished houses.
