Rehabilitation of the episcopal palace in Albarracín

Albarracín, Teruel, Aragón.

Dating of the building: 16th century.

Applicant: Teruel - Albarracín Diocese.

Reason for the award :

For the restoration of the Episcopal Palace and its rehabilitation as the Santa María Foundation.

The old episcopal palace, abandoned for two hundred years, was restored into a multipurpose building, namely, the Congress Palace, the Diocesan Museum, and the Workshop School.

Its abrupt orography, together with its impressive wealth of crenelated walls, emblazoned houses, squares, narrow streets, and cathedral make Albarracín one of the most picturesque towns in the province of Teruel. The episcopal palace is one of its most monumental buildings. It is an extensive construction with a noble Baroque façade raised in different styles from the 16th century.

The Cultural Association for Labor and Industrial Promotion, today the Santa María de Albarracín Foundation, had the idea of rehabilitating and giving new life to the immense palace, abandoned for more than two centuries. The project consisted of converting the old farm into a multipurpose building, namely, the Congress Palace, the Diocesan Museum, in the rooms once occupied by the bishop, and the Albarracín Monumental Training Centre Workshop School. The works provided the old palace with new installations and roofs as well as modern lighting.
