“Light in images” Foundation

Dating of the building: 1999 - 2009.

Applicant: Polytechnic University of Valencia.

Reason for the award :

For the restoration work carried out by this foundation since 1999 of many significant objects of Valencian cultural heritage; parallel to this work, the foundation's workshops, exhibitions, and publications promote traditional workshops among schoolchildren and university students.

The “light in images” foundation, created at the request of the Valencian Regional Government in 1999, is behind all the restorations in the outstanding religious buildings of the autonomous community.

In 2009, it was ten years since the origin of the Valencian “Light in images” foundation. Its objective has been the recovery, intervention, and dissemination of the artistic patrimony of this community. Until the acknowledgment with the Europa Nostra prize, the foundation had restored more than 2,200 movable assets, in addition to 34 first-class artistic buildings, such as the cathedrals of Valencia, Segorbe, and Orihuela, the co-cathedral of Alicante, and the collegiate church of Santa María de Játiva. Their work has not been confined to large cities, but also to small towns, where funding is often challenging to obtain. In these latter cases, the restored buildings have hosted exhibitions organized by the foundation to publicize its work and make the population aware of the richness of its artistic heritage and the importance of preserving it.
