To commemorate the 5th anniversary of Tarragona’s inclusion in the UNESCO list, the City Council and the territorial educational services decided to promote a project that, given its success, has been adopted by other communities.

“The school adopts a Monument” school programme has its origin in Tarragona within the framework of the 5th anniversary of the declaration of the architectural complex of Roman Tarraco (Tarragona, Altafulla, Constantí, and Roda de Barà) as a UNESCO World Heritage. The programme is part of a joint initiative of the Tarragona City Council through the History Museum and the territorial services of the Catalonia Regional Government. In the first phase, carried out between 2005 and 2007, almost all the public and subsidized primary and secondary education centres in the city participated, including the assistance of teachers, parents’ associations, and non-teaching personnel. Each participating centre has adopted a monument or monumental space of the cultural, historical, artistic, and natural heritage in the city, with the aim of promoting in the students the feeling of being part of a common culture and wealth. The centres have carried out visits, activities, and different training processes to achieve this objective. “ The school adopts a Monument” is a project that has proven to be very useful in other European countries, involving educational centres in the valuation and conservation of their heritage. In Spain, the project has been implemented in Extremadura.
