Reason for the award :

The jury highlighted the relationship between the heritage value of the farmhouse and sustainable tourism, as well as the integration of the project into “localism”.

The knowledge acquired during the works will be of great use to professionals working on similar projects in the future.

Between 2004 and 2015, the Els Ports Natural Park inventoried the park’s traditional rural architecture. After the study of traditional buildings and the publication of a manual of good practices in the intervention of rural architectural heritage, the Mas Burot farmhouse was selected for its restoration and later usage for sustainable tourism purposes. The problems after years of neglect were structural: roof collapse, water leaks, deterioration of the traditional plaster and lime walls, and disappearance of the upper floor and access stairs. Natural materials from the environment were scrupulously used for the restoration, and it was decided not to install electricity and other modern services. Also, during the rehabilitation, the responsible company carried out practical demonstrations of the traditional techniques used. The farmhouse now hosts guided tours for both tourists and architectural and heritage professionals.
