Works in Plaza de Cascorro number 11

Dating of the building: 17th - 19th century.

Applicant: Mariano Bayón Álvarez.

Reason for the award :

For the imaginative rehabilitation housing project including new additions and open free interior space.

The rehabilitation of a central “corrala” in the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés was completed with the creation of a plaza that improves pedestrian circulation in a previously highly congested area.

The “corralas”, much referenced in Zarzuela, Spanish operetta, and Madrid literature, are a typical unit of modest housing in old Madrid. Small in size, they all have balconies in common that overlook an interior patio. The “corrala” of number 11 of the Plaza de Cascorro, in the heart of the Lavapiés neighborhood, threatened ruin. The Municipal Housing Company of Madrid took advantage of the refurbishing and modernization of the “corrala” to develop an internal plaza that would improve circulation in the area. At the same time that twelve houses were renovated, thirteen new floors were put in. They were all equipped with the basic facilities that they previously lacked.
